Are you making changes to your diet this year? Maybe you are focusing on eating healthier, or maybe you (or a loved one) has developed an allergy or intolerance to a certain food?
I know that I set out this year with lofty goals of completely changing my diet – actually, to change the eating habits of my whole family. No sugar, less fat, only fruits and veggies for snacking, etc. Now, here we are in the first week of February, and (confession time) I had a doughnut for breakfast.
It can be tough to make sweeping changes like that! The truth is, I love snacking. Fruits and veggies are great, but sometimes I want a cracker or a chip. Homemade is great, but sometimes I need a quick snack or meal on the go.
So, what’s a busy, snack-loving mom on the go to do? Check out Van’s Natural Foods.
Van’s has long been a part of our breakfast routine. We love their frozen waffles (wheat and gluten-free). As a mom, I have always felt comfortable feeding them to my kids. We toast them, cut them into strips and give the kids a small dollop of honey in which to dip them. Not only do the kids love them, they wake up asking for them.
However, in our house, Van’s isn’t just for breakfast anymore! The introduction last year of their cracker, chip and snack bar lines has made them a leader in better-for-you snacking.
Recently, Van’s sent us a goodie box of products to try out, including some of their new gluten-free chips and delicious PB&J sandwich bars, as well as coupons to try out some of their frozen snacks and crackers.
Before even opening the products, I checked out the labels. I was thrilled to see the allergy-friendly labeling. These labels go far beyond the basics – for example, my favorite Van’s waffles are certified gluten-free, egg free, dairy free, corn free, are all natural, do not contain artificial colors or preservatives, contain a full serving of whole grains, and are kosher. WHEW! That’s a lot of information – all in one spot and easy to read.
Once I opened the box, I was happy to find that the quality of the food and flavors were exactly what I was expecting. Both of the kids love the gluten-free PB&J sandwiches (both the strawberry and blueberry).
The Mighty Good BBQ chips were the preferred choice of my husband and oldest son. I, on the other hand, thoroughly enjoy the flavors of the Nacho, Nacho, Man! chips (oh, and yes, I did sing the song as I typed that).
The snacks and waffles are wonderful by themselves – but they can also be used as great better-for-you substitutes in some of your favorite recipes. For example, use the Nacho, Nacho, Man! chips in your favorite tortilla soup; grind up the chips or crackers and substitute them for traditional breadcrumbs; or toast up a waffle to create a crouton.
