10K… Oy Vey

Oy vey, do I hurt! But, I am extremely proud to say that my friend, Amynah, and I completed our very first 10k on February 16! Not only did we finish, but we did better than we ever expected.

Following a run/walk interval format, our primary goal was to cross the finish line – even if it took 2 hours. Based on our training, we were hoping to finish in less than 1 hour and 40 minutes. When we reached the half-way mark and were doing better than expected, we revised that goal and decided to try to finish in less than 1 hour and 30 minutes.

When it was all said and done, we covered 6.2 miles in just over 1 hour and 23 minutes! We finished with our best average per-mile pace EVER – including training runs and 5k races we have completed.

I am so proud of my accomplishment, that I feel the need to give my very own “Oscar” speech.

First, huge thanks go out to Amynah – she is a great training partner. We each have different strengths, and I think we help to push each other at different times during each training run and each race.

I also have to give a big thanks to my and Amynah’s husbands, Rahn & Firoz – they have encouraged us, watched kids while we trained, and even pushed the kids in strollers during 5k races, allowing us to give it our all.

This would never have been possible without a group of wonderful friends who, several years back, supported my efforts to get more active. They walked with me at parks or at the mall… always willing to go my pace, even if it slowed them down considerably. For the first time in my life, I had friends who didn’t make me feel bad about my (lack of) athletic ability – and because of that support, I kept on walking and eventually started running. So, in addition to Amynah, I must say a big THANK YOU to Chelsea, Becky, Jina, and Beth.

Oh, and to all of those mean girls I’ve known – from elementary school, middle school, high school, college and beyond… those girls who made me feel worthless and told me I was fat and lazy… to all of you… a big PPTHHPTHPFFTHPPPT!!! Y’all were SOOOO WRONG!!!!

That’s my girl. I am so glad you have been able to accomplish so much in such a short time. You sure have to have a lot of energy to keep up with your 3 boys. They are all very active……
